NBA Media Day Gives Us a First Look at Bill Russell Jersey Patch

The recent NBA Media Day has given us a first look at the special patch that will feature on NBA jerseys in the 2022-23 season to honor Bill Russell.

The patch appears on the right shoulder of all 2022-2023 NBA shirts - it's a black circle with a white number six in its center, in the same style as worn by Russell during his playing days from 1957 to 1969.

In addition to the patch, the NBA earlier this summer also announced that the number six would be retired across the whole league, excluding players who already wore it before the announcement.

While it was initially stated that the Celtics would have a "separate and unique recognition" of Russell on their jerseys, the shirts worn at the Media Day had the same patch as for all other teams - let's see if we will get an update on that over the coming weeks.

Bill Russell was an absolute legend of the game, winning a total of 11 NBA championships across the 13 years of his playing career at the Boston Celtics as well as an Olympic gold medal in 1956. As a player-coach, he won two NBA titles with the Celtics in 1968 and 1969. The also managed the Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings in the 1970s and 1980s.
