As the NBA calendar turns toward the offseason, all eyes shift to the future stars of the league at the annual Summer League. It’s our first chance to see top draft picks and promising young talent in their new team colors. However, a look at the jerseys on display for the 2025 tournament continues a disappointing trend of uninspired, template-based designs from Nike, begging the question: is this a missed opportunity?

For fans of basketball aesthetics and jersey design, the Summer League has become synonymous with placeholder uniforms that lack the identity and creativity of their regular-season counterparts. This year’s collection is no exception. The jerseys are built on a starkly simple Nike template, a one-size-fits-all approach that strips teams of their unique branding.

For example, the Miami Heat are outfitted in a black version of the template. It features a basic "MIAMI" wordmark in a clean, white font, with the player number placed directly below. Beyond the red accent on the collar and the generic design on the sides, the uniform is a study in minimalism. This same structure is applied across the board, whether for the Warriors, 76ers, or Spurs, creating a homogenous look that feels more like a practice scrimmage than a professional showcase.

2024 Summer League Jerseys vs 2025 Summer League Jerseys

The 2024 NBA Summer League Template features a large, distinct side panel in a contrasting color that runs from the armpit straight down to the hem. The 2025 template replaces this with a side stripe. This new construction creates a continuous line flowing from the armhole down the side of the jersey. The armpits are no longer colored.

Is it boring? By almost any design metric, yes. The lack of individuality or storytelling suggests that for Nike, the Summer League is an obligation to be fulfilled with the least possible creative investment. The consistent use of generic, low-effort templates year after year feels like a disservice to the teams and more importantly the new players.
